This year in library class...

First graders will learn about the basic parts of a book, learn about authors and illustrators, and determine the difference between fiction and nonfiction with books about ducks, owls, snow, and countries.  They will also hear books written in various genres.


Second graders
will learn about authors and illustrators Jan Brett and Steven Kellogg and how their books are created.  They will learn how to choose appropriate higher level books to read.  Fiction and nonfiction will be explored in units of study about wolves, Appalachia, and frogs.  The second graders will also study fairy tales and folktales.

Third Graders will review the definition and arrangement of fiction and nonfiction books.  They will learn to use computers to search for books in the library.  The biography, tall tales, and poetry genres will be studied.  Third graders will also learn about author / illustrator Patricia Polacco.  The third graders will do a research project about unusual animals.

Fourth graders will review the use of the Dewey Decimal system for call numbers for nonfiction books.  They will review the use of computers to locate books in the library collection.  Various research tools will be used during lessons this year, including dictionaries, almanacs, and encyclopedias.  The students will complete a research project and then create a powerpoint to present their information.  The fourth grade social studies book will be used when the students study the various parts of a book.  Historical fiction and nontraditional tales genres will be studied during the year.
